The ULA Node: A Minimalist Backpack for Everyday Carry, Trail, and Travel Content
At ULA, we’ve always been rooted in long-distance hiking—building gear that earns its place mile after mile. But with the Node, we set out to solve a different problem. One we face every day.
We wanted to design a pack that could move through modern life with the same intention as a backcountry kit. Something that felt just as natural on a morning train as it did on a dirt trail. A pack that was compact, capable, and made to carry the essentials—nothing extra, nothing wasted.
We wanted real function. Durable, weatherproof fabrics like UltraWeave. A main compartment sized with intention—fitting a large, medium, and small packing cube perfectly. Thoughtful access, intuitive organization, and a silhouette that disappears when you wear it.
At just 20 Liters and around 21 ounces, the Node is the smallest frameless pack in the line up.

Internal organization keeps your gear tight and intuitive, while weather-resistant materials ensure you’re covered when conditions shift. From city streets to switchbacks, the Node is designed to move with you—every mile, every mode, every moment.
At first glance, the Node keeps things clean and minimal. But a closer look reveals a thoughtful design packed with utility. The ultrastretch exterior mesh pockets give you flexible, quick-access storage without bulking out the silhouette. A front zippered pocket with a zipper garage protects your essentials from snags and weather, while the roll-top closure and buckled compression strap ensure your gear stays secure and streamlined.
Customizable Carry Comfort
The Node is compatible with our Packrat and Dragonfly hip belts, giving you added support for heavier loads. The shoulder harness uses ergonomically designed S-straps and includes a removable, adjustable sternum strap, letting you dial in the fit for all-day comfort—whether you’re on foot, bike, or trail. As with all of our shoulder straps, the Node’s feature daisy chain webbing that allows you to attach any ULA shoulder strap accessory like a shoulder strap pocket or flow water bottle holder.
Smart Internal Organization
Inside, you’ll find a layout designed to keep everything in its place. A padded laptop sleeve handles your tech, while two additional sleeves—one static, one UltraStretch—give you options for organizing notebooks, chargers, snacks, or gear. Internal tabs make it easy to add a stash pocket for smaller essentials like keys, wallet, or first aid.
Features:
External Mesh Pockets – The side pockets of the Node are made of UltraStretch Mesh and feature a pleated design that enables them to comfortably fit water bottles like a 1 liter Smartwater bottle and larger. In addition to the side pockets the dorsal pocket on the Node is made of UltraStretch and all 3 have laser cut drain ports.
Roll Top Closure – The Node features a roll top closure system with pleated side panels on the extension collar to make rolling the pack up more ergonomic. It is then fixed with a single webbing buckle that features a strap keeper to help you stay tidy.
QAP(Quick Access Pocket) – The QAP on the Node features a zipper garage and is designed to pleat outwardly to help pack more efficiently when the pack is close to full capacity. 210 UltraGrid makes up the liner and highlights the carabiner loop keeping your stuff easy to find.
The UltraWeave version features YKK AquaGuard zippers while the Robic version features Standard YKK zippers.

Material breakdown
Main Body Fabric:
Ultra 400X is a next-generation composite fabric that blends a recycled 400D polyester face with a criss-cross grid of UHMWPE (Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) fibers—one of the strongest materials available by weight. It’s finished with a waterproof film backing that delivers high hydrostatic resistance, often exceeding 200 PSI, making it effectively waterproof for most use cases. Ultra 400X is incredibly abrasion- and tear-resistant, with a slightly glossy technical finish and a firm hand feel. It’s ideal for users who prioritize weatherproof performance and maximum strength without a significant weight penalty.
Black Diamond 420D Robic is a high-tenacity nylon built for hard use. At 420 denier, it strikes a balance between ruggedness and flexibility, offering strong abrasion resistance and durability while still being supple enough for a comfortable carry. Robic nylon uses engineered yarns that resist tearing and deformation better than standard nylon 6 fabrics. The finish is smooth and slightly glossy, with a traditional technical pack look and feel, making it an ideal choice for those who want tried-and-true reliability in a versatile material.
330D Brushed Robic takes the durability of high-tenacity nylon and wraps it in a softer, matte finish. The brushed face creates a tactile, fabric-like feel that’s quieter and less slick than standard pack cloths. While slightly less abrasion-resistant than heavier options, it still holds up well for daily carry and light trail use. This material is perfect for users who value understated style and a softer touch without compromising on core durability.
Design Philosophy
At its core, the Node was about restraint—removing anything that didn’t serve the carry. We didn’t want flashy. We wanted functional. Every decision came down to one question: Does this make it better to use, or just more complicated?
“We weren’t trying to reinvent the wheel—we were trying to refine it,” says Jeremy, ULA’s lead designer. “We wanted to build a functional rolltop bag for everyday carry that gives commuters and day hikers an alternative to the Dragonfly or Packrat closure styles.”
That meant obsessing over dimensions. Tuning the volume to work seamlessly with our packing cube system. Balancing the size so it was compact enough to wear all day, but roomy enough to skip the suitcase on a weekend trip.
The result is a pack with no filler. Every seam has a purpose. Every material was chosen for its performance—not just its appearance.
“I wanted something I could carry into a meeting in the morning and take up a canyon that afternoon,” says Peter, ULA’s owner. “The Node is that bag. It’s quiet, adaptable, and gets out of the way—until you need it.”
We didn’t set out to make a lifestyle piece. We set out to make a tool. And if we did our job right, the Node won’t be the loudest thing in the room—it’ll just be the one that works.
Made in Logan, Utah
Every Node is built by hand in Logan, Utah—just like every pack we’ve ever made. For us, domestic manufacturing is a core part of who we are.
We’ve been designing and sewing gear in the same town for over 20 years, surrounded by the mountains that shaped our earliest designs. Keeping production based in Logan keeps us close to what matters: the craft, the people, and the landscapes that test our gear before it ever hits a shelf.
“We’ve always built packs for real use, by real people,” says Peter, ULA’s owner. “That means staying close to the process—so we can stand behind every stitch. Every zipper, every seam, every panel on the Node was put together by someone who cares about the end product.”
This kind of small-batch, domestic production isn’t fast. It’s not cheap. But it gives us complete control over quality, design, and materials. It means when we say a pack is made to last—we mean it. And even back it by a lifetime guarantee.
Building the Node in-house gave us the freedom to focus on function over trend, to use premium materials like UltraWeave, and to obsess over fit and finish. Nothing gets greenlit unless we’d carry it ourselves, and nothing leaves the building unless it meets our standard.
